TALKING POINTS: SOUTHAMPTON V UNITED

Image
By Edet Joseph Edinson Cavani was the name on every Manchester United fan's lips after the Reds came back from two goals down to claim another vital three points. The Uruguayan came off the bench to score twice and provide an assist for Bruno Fernandes, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s substitution proved crucial in our incredible comeback against the Saints. The 3-2 win had plenty of talking points and we’ve pulled them together here... ____________________________________________ CAVANI MEANT ALOT  The Uruguayan goal machine replaced Mason Greenwood at half-time and provided an instant threat. Cavani’s high pressing and constant movement caused the Southampton defence all sorts of trouble and his first goal involvement came on the hour-mark as his precise cross found Bruno Fernandes in the box, who scored to half the Saints’ lead. Cavani then grabbed our equaliser with an instinctive diving header as he brilliantly met Fernandes's cross-cum-shot. The coup de ...

UNDER-23S IN LIVE MUTV ACTION ON SUNDAY

Image
Manchester United face Tottenham in front of the MUTV cameras on Sunday, looking to make it three wins on the bounce in Premier League 2. The young Reds were beaten at Morecambe in the Papa John's Trophy in midweek but had already guaranteed qualification for the knock-out stages. The return to league action, in the live 17:00 GMT kick-off this weekend, presents the perfect opportunity to show the team's true colours. Lead coach Neil Wood felt the 4-0 scoreline flattered the League Two team but he will look for a response at the weekend. “We had a large amount of possession for big periods of the game and dominated the play but couldn't break them down,” he explained to us. “The biggest lesson for us is they get one chance, and it's a goal. Two chances - two goals.  “The disappointing thing for us, which we have to correct and get better at, is not giving soft chances and soft goals away. We've got to get better at making our chances as well but this was...

FRED BELIEVES EVERYONE WILL BE NEEDED

Image
Fred says every Manchester United player will play an important role in the team’s hectic run of fixtures between now and the end of 2020. The Reds are back in Premier League action this weekend, at home to West Bromwich Albion, and then face a further 11 matches across the next six weeks in three different competitions. It promises to be a hugely challenging period but Fred is confident the squad can cope. __________________________________________ “There are a lot of games but what’s good about it is we’ve got a really good group, and we will need everyone,”  Fred told us.  “That’s the best thing about having the group: we will be able to help each other, because there will be injuries, knocks and niggles. “Getting a consecutive run of games and a consecutive run of wins is the goal. We know our strengths and we know what we need to work on. As I said, we have a good group and we want to try and get a good run of victories in this intense period." Fol...

FRIDAY BRIEFING: OLE'S ASSIGNMENT

Image
The wait is nearly over, as Manchester United return to Premier League action this weekend with a Saturday night (20:00 GMT) encounter against West Brom. It is a rare time-slot for a fixture at Old Trafford, but the Reds will hopefully be raring to go following the final international break of 2020. It's really a case of full steam ahead for the Reds, as we look to build on the 3-1 victory at Everton last time out, when Bruno Fernandes scored twice and Edinson Cavani got off the mark, and we look forward to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's press conference with relish as he should provide an update on the state of his squad's fitness heading into the game with Slaven Bilic's Baggies. __________________________________________ The manager will speak to us and address the media at his press conference (which is scheduled for 13:00 GMT) via video call, due to the current COVID-19 restrictions. It is embargoed until 13:30 GMT, when we will run the video in full in the Off...

EARLY TEAM NEWS : PLAYERS ABSENT IN TRAINING

Image
Manchester United are back in Premier League action on Saturday, when they welcome West Brom to Old Trafford for a 20:00 GMT kick-off. With international football now done and dusted until 2021, the start of a hectic period pits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Reds against a Baggies side that has struggled since gaining promotion back to the top flight. After the encouraging win at Everton last time out, United are seeking a first home win of the league term in order to continue pushing up the table. TELLES HAS A CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF AGAINST WEST BROM. In defence, Alex Telles should now be an option at left-back after testing negative for COVID-19, even if his lengthy journey to South America for Brazil's World Cup qualifiers must be a factor. It would be a timely boost if he can play, with Luke Shaw out with a hamstring problem, although Brandon Williams is another of the options and Axel Tuanzebe came on at Everton in that position. Marcos Rojo has also had ...

DE GEA FEELS "RIGHT AT HOME" IN MANCHESTER

Image
Next year marks a decade since David De Gea joined Manchester United as a 20-year-old keeper with so much to prove. Chosen as the club's replacement for the legendary Edwin van der Sar, the pressure was on the slender Spaniard from the outset and he made his Premier League debut against Saturday's opponents West Brom, drawing criticism for failing to keep out a goal by Shane Long. After an understandable period of adaptation and intense scrutiny, he has gone on to become one of the world's best in his position. On the day of United's last outing, the fabulous 3-1 win at Everton, he turned 30 and Inside United, the official magazine, found our latest cover star in a reflective mood as it was time to look back on a remarkable spell at Old Trafford that has seen him win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award four times. “Well, I'm still the same person I am today but I'm much more mature now,” David told us, when asked what his personality was like...

THURSDAY BRIEFING: TUANZEBE'S CALL TO ACTION

Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe says the Reds’ underwhelming home form in the Premier League is something the players need to put right, starting with Saturday’s visit of West Brom. Speaking in an interview for United Review, our official matchday programme, the young defender concedes he is as surprised as anyone that we have yet to pick up a victory at Old Trafford in the league this season, with our winless run extending to six games if you go back to 2019/20. “I couldn’t tell you, to be honest,” Axel says when asked what is behind our poor form in M16, with Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Arsenal all tasting victory here in recent weeks. “I think we just need to go out and play the game like it’s any other game. “It’s as surprising to us as it is to the fans and everyone else watching. But we definitely need to correct it." The strange home sequence is juxtaposed by an excellent away record – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side need one more win to set an all-time club landmar...
